HigherEd.org focuses on providing knowledge management (KM) for higher education. This typically involves the development of software that leverages data and technology to facilitate better postsecondary decision-making at all levels — national, state, and institutional. HigherEd.org is a prime contractor with the U.S. Department of Education and is a subcontractor to various companies and organizations, including the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).
HigherEd.org's staff have been involved for many years in using and adding value to IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) data. With strong ties to the national, regional, and state groups and the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), HigherEd.org is able to tap into a talented network of staff and consultants. HigherEd.org has created and delivered a variety of key online data tools that have increased efficiency and helped deliver postsecondary data more effectively.
HigherEd.org, Inc. was founded in 2002 by John Milam with a mission to help transform educational organizations through the principles of knowledge management (KM).
Dr. Milam has held institutional research positions at the University of Houston, West Virginia University, and George Mason University, where he designed the first, web-based GMU Data Warehouse. Since 1995, he has maintained the web site Internet Resources for Institutional Research. From 1999 to 2002, he served as a Research Associate Professor in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. He was on loan part-time from UVa in 2001-02 to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), where he directed planning for the Virginia Virtual University project.
For a vision of how knowledge management can help transform higher education by effectively leveraging relative inexpensive internet technology, see the Knowledge Base article entitled Knowledge Management for Higher Education (PDF). Other recent articles concern Ontologies in Higher Education (PDF) and Organizational Learning through Knowledge Workers and Infomediaries (PDF). Dr. Milam is also the author of a teaching tool about the Internet and higher education data, entitled Webmaster: The Novel (PDF).
As part of its work, HigherEd.org is engaged in a number of different projects, among them the ANSWERS web site, the Dataset Cutting Tool for the IPEDS Peer Analysis System, and a national study of non-credit course activity sponsored by the Lumina Foundation.
Past clients of HigherEd.org include the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) , the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) , the Association of Governing Boards, and the World Bank.
