Fall 2006 Exiting Student Records

The Exiting Student record captures the exiting student status, majors/degrees earned, GPA's, early field experiences, student teaching/licensure, awards, test scores, and any institutionally defined fields. The Exiting student record layout was revised based on feedback about the Beginning Student record. Here are some things to be aware of as you begin to prepare data for the Fall 2006 Exiting Student record submission.

1. When students exit your program by stopping-out, dropping-out, completing with a degree, or completing without a degree, you will enter an exit record into the TPA. Once this exit record has been entered, the TPA will work with the VITAL Survey System to generate follow-up surveys that will be sent to students one year, three years, five years, and ten years following their exit date. The Exiting Student record acts as the "switch" for enabling these survey collections.

2. Once students exit the program, you may continue to submit Contact update records so that the most recent email addresses of your exiters can be on file for the survey system to access. The survey data that are collected can be accessed along with Beginning, Continuing, and Exiting Student records from the Dataset Cutting Tool (DCT) to assit with research and reporting efforts at your school.

3. By entering the Exiting Student records into the TPA you will be able to use the Reports functionality of the TPA to assist you with the preparation of your school's Biennial, PEDS, NCATE, TEAC, and Title II reports.

As a rule, data should be provided for all fields. Some fields will not produce errors if they are blank to facilitate data entry by institutions that legitimately do not have that information. If you have too much missing data, you may be required to resubmit your file.
